My 4th Grade Year at Mast Way

What I will remember most about my fourth grade year at mast way. One or the things I will remember most about this year is that I had a super nice teacher. Another thing is that we went to the state house and met the governor of New Hampshire. A very big unit of ours was poetry which I really enjoyed we made a full book of poetry! We also had a unit where we studied creatures around the lamprey river; mine was the painted turtle. And we did a rocks and minerals unit. My favorite thing was read aloud, Mrs. Gerard would get really into it so she would do hilarious voices, and I loved that.

What I am most proud of that I accomplished this year was our wax museum where we acted like famous people from New Hampshire. I was Marilla Ricker, and for those of you that don’t know Marilla Ricker was the first women to pass the bar exam to become a lawyer. We also made posters for our wax museum with stuff on them like portraits poetry about our people a time line about them and a full biography.

What I am looking forward to next year at the middle school. I am really looking forward to having more freedom: you don’t have to walk in lines. You get a locker but might have to share a locker. There are a lot of clubs including drama club, ski club, mine craft club, star wars club, cinema club and homework club. But I will always miss Mast Way Elementary School.

Our Wax Mueseum

We have been studying famous New Hampshire people. Mine is Marilla Ricker 1st women to pass the bar exam. I feel that this whole project was one of the hardest ones that we have ever done. Our famous New Hampshire person studies have been leading up to a class wax museum. You might be wondering what is up with this wax museum? Well the answer is that we will be wearing costumes that would be what our person would be wearing. We will also have buttons that you press, when you press a button the person will start saying a small report (not the whole biography we wrote!) about some of the highlights of our person. I think a very challenging part of the project were the posters that we made about our people. I will remember about my person most  is that she was the first female lawyer and to never give up no matter what. I am most proud of when we wrapped up the whole unit did the wax museum and were happy with what we had done.

Marilla Ricker biography

Marilla Ricker By: Chloe Hawkes Have you ever wondered how some of the first women lawyers started out? Well here is how one named Marilla Ricker did. Marilla was born on March 18 1840 in Durham New Hampshire. Her parents were Johnathan and Sarah Young, her dad was a lawyer and a big inspiration for her. She went to college in New London New Hampshire to study law in 1889. With her dads support and a great education she went on with a good life. Now that you’ve heard about her earlier life hear she is when she is growing up. She married John Ricker in 1863, John was 33 years older than her. Unfortunately just a short time after she married him he died in 1866. She became a lawyer in 1890. She lived to be 80 years old that was a lot in that time! She died on November, 12, 1920. As you can see her life was quite ordinary but she sure did make a difference as a lawyer. Marilla, when she found a thing she was good at she was spectacular at it she was a great lawyer. She used to be a teacher in Lee and Dover at 16. As I stated earlier she became a lawyer in 1890 by passing the bar exam. She was the second female lawyer in the USA. She also helped out her old town in the court room for free. It took hard work and perseverance but she made it as a lawyer. All of that was not enough for her she needed to do more. So she made it so that all women could take the bar exam. She made it big and she went on the supreme court of the US in 1891. In her time women weren’t allowed to vote but she attempted to vote in 1870 and 1873, she worked hard from 1913 to 1920 for women voting with Susan B Anthony and they got it in 1920. Now you know why I said before that she made a difference as a lawyer because boy was she good. She was absolutely a strong independent women. She took the bar exam with 18 men and got a higher score than every single one of them! Before that she went to Germany for 4 years to study freethinking. She would often pin her hair back to look more like a man. One of her most famous quotes was “Nothing grows slower than the truth and nothing grows faster than superstition.” She really was an accomplished lady. She was also a very kind lady she did charity and helped the poor. She was known as the prisoner’s friend because of the amount of time she spent with them. She also often worked with the poor for free, so she was a philanthropist a person who helped with charity, and if a person needed help but were poor she wouldn’t charge them at all. After my research I can see that she was a kind hearted, determined, free thinking, out of the ordinary lawyer that was female.

My Persuasive Essay: why you should conserve electricity

When you keep a light on all night all you think is “What is the worst thing that could happen?” Our country uses a lot to much electricity. Try to stop! Because the USA holds only 5% of the world’s people but uses 25% of the electricity. 65% of the electricity in an average Americans home is used just for heat. Each computer in use makes that person using it spend an extra $34.00 a year. Each dish washer uses 80% of the electricity in the outlet it is plugged into just for heat.If a 100 watt bulb is on for half a day every day for a year it could burn 400 pounds of fossil fuel. Do you want this sort of stuff to happen to our environment? If not, try to conserve your electricity.
Why should I help?  You ask. Well conserving electricity could help earth and you. Conserving electricity can reduce, it can also reduce acid rain, and save fossil fuels: non-non-renewable power sources that could take billions of years to reform. By helping out it could also benefit you by saving you money. Conserving electricity protects us from losing a thing called the ozone layer a layer in the earth that protects us from ultra violet light rays. Conserving electricity could even help global warming and climate change. So those are many, many reasons that you should conserve electricity.

I can tell that you are wondering “How could I help?” Well it’s not like you need a whole army! If you want some easy ways to help, read this! Encourage your family to buy florescent lights. You could also put your dish washer on cold, or maybe you could try to share a computer with a sibling or two. You can turn off the heat and put on a layer. Another easy way to conserve electricity is to unplug appliances when you are not using them. You can turn off your lights at night and have a shadow puppet show or turn off your lights on sunny days. Here is a big one, TELL YOUR FRIENDS! See you can help out if you are 2-200! Any age it makes a difference one person at a time!

People all around you are already starting take me for example, I turn off my lights and appliances at night. My family now puts our dish washer on cold and uses fluorescent lights. I use my sister’s old computer, I usually keep my heat down and put on a blanket, and I plan to get my whole school on board. So if I still have your attention please listen to this next part.

I feel very strongly about this, I do not want to waste all of our resources over a thing like this that should not have started in the first place. We don’t want to lose or electricity and I don’t want us all to suffer from a couple of people not helping. So I hope everyone tries to help this situation so that future generations can live good lives. So  we all need to work together to save the earth.
